He appears much less willing than most people to process emotional stimulation. Because of his aversion to becoming engaged in affectively charged situations, he is at risk for being socially and emotionally withdrawn. Reluctance to process affect does not preclude a person’s being interested in and capable of forming attachments to other people. However, the emergence of strong feelings often leads people like him to break off an interpersonal interaction, and their aversion to emotionality may limit their social attractiveness. In his case, this aversion to emotionality coincides with the previously noted indications that he is reluctant or even fearful of expressing his feelings openly. Ordinarily, persons who are emotionally constricted seek to minimize their involvement in affectively charged situations in which they might be expected to express feelings in ways that are difficult for them. Taken together, these data identify a degree of emotional constriction that is likely to impair significantly his ability to interact effectively with the environment.
