The superior tibiofibular joint is a plane synovial joint formed by the articulation of the head of the fibula with the posterolateral aspect of the tibia (Fig. 16-12A). In about 10% of the population, the synovial membrane is continuous with the knee joint through the subpopliteal bursa. Motion has been described as superior and inferior sliding of the fibula, anteroposterior glide, and fibular rotation.
