European Innovation Fund: This grant funding programme supports the demonstration of innovativelow-carbon technologies and provides grants of up to 60% of the relevant (decarbonisation) costs ofprojects. Up to 40% of the grant can be given before the whole project is fully up and running, whichhelps projects attract private investment and close the remaining financing gap. The scheme is fairlycomplex in design, making it potentially difficult to access for SMEs that lack the expertise to writesuccessful bids. Its design also targets low-innovation, large-scale projects, which puts the scheme’susefulness in question. Recognition of those shortcomings triggered recent changes and improved theinnovative range and accessibility of the scheme, notably via a mid-sized call that is more suitable forocean energy projects.
