Beyond examining the effects of security-enhancing mental representations, adult attachment researchers have examined whether the same broaden-and-build effects occur within interpersonal contexts in which an actual relationship partner's responsiveness and supportive behaviors augment one's sense of security. Such behavior on the part of a relationship partner, therapist, or leader may enhance a person's confidence in the availability and responsiveness of his or her social interaction partners, setting in motion the broaden-and-build cycle of attachment security. In other words, a relationship partner who acts as a reliable security provider can reactivate the secure-base script and help a person function more securely.
