Given this definition of education it is obvious that a person’s education is never complete and that lifelong education is a necessity for full human development. Yet if one accepts this definition of education, a number of problems arise with regard to the usage of the term adult education by adult educators in the United States. Paterson makes a strong case that only liberal adult education can properly be called adult education because it alone fulfills all the requirements for an educational enterprise. He distinguishes liberal adult education from what is called vocational education, role education, and education for leisure. Only in cases where the education in these other forms is broadly liberal would they be classified as adult educational activities.
