Following the digitization of mass communication and the rising importance of mediated communication in various walks of life in modern societies, it has emerged a new trend of mass communication theories and given rise to such fields of theories as computer‐mediated communication theories, new media theories, etc. In connection to this new trend of theoretical development is the debate on the applicability of conventional mass communication theories, such as cultivation theory, agenda‐setting theory, spiral of silence theory, uses and gratifications theory, which have been invented under the context of traditional media, in examining the communication phenomena in the digital era.You are asked to give your views of whether the conventional mass communication theories are vulnerable to theoretical challenges. You can give your views by answering the following questions:i) What are the arguments which challenge the applicability of those conventional mass communication theories?ii) Do you agree with these arguments? Select two theories you learnt from the course and discuss their applicability in new media context.
