While most brain changes that occur with dementia are irreversible and worsen over time, treatable conditions may exacerbate the dementia behaviors. The result is a behavior that becomes the primary method of the resident's non-verbal expression. Our responsibility is to identify and address the reversible conditions and factors causing the distressed behavior. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause of the treatable condition may improve overall behavior, im- prove quality of life, and help preserve the dignity of residents.
