Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar is quoted as saying, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” One of the tragedies in many churches is that the pastor and people alike do not know their reason for being. In this situation a church loses its sense of direction and often gets caught up in many activities— always busy doing but having no real purpose. We can compare it to a rocking chair. It keeps on moving but goes nowhere. At this point, we must ask, “Why in the world did God establish a church?” Before we discuss priorities, we must define the mission* of the church to discover its reason for being. This definition will then enable us to plan our time appropriately.
