Advances in technology have allowed the tablet computer to become not only more capable but also more affordable.
Prior advances in low cost computing with netbooks, laptops, new displays, the OLPC and the Intel classmate have laid the foundation for the tablet computer. Tablets offer a number of advantages over a traditional laptop or desktop computer, including a more direct interaction with content via a touch display, a more portable size and weight, a simplified user interface, greatly superior battery life and reduced cost [3]. These advantages have seen it become adopted into a number of different settings, both replacing traditional computers [2] and also augmenting existing settings where a computer was not used before [1]. However, while tablet devices have been adopted in many facets of life and the workplace, we have not seen the broad adoption of such devices in the classroom. There are justified concerns with the size, cost, reuse and form factor of these devices versus paper- and notebooks.
