What are the models that we try to foster and climb to? The larger reality is that everyone plugged into the digital world needs to be aware of their presence and that once an image exists—either through an actual photograph or through the fabrication through video/photo editing—it is downright impossible to unmake it. Once a dirty or ribald joke is posted, it cannot be unposted easily. While this may cause people to think about their actions, it leaves a host of others at the mercy of the archival system. Can you imagine a picture of a young drunk Abraham Lincoln? Who knows what happened in that log cabin of his? And that is precisely the point. Everyone doesn’t need to know everything all the time. The continuous documenting of our lives in digital format not only disrupts the present, it also has severe consequences for our own development as people or the people we look up to.
