Moving proximally, one may palpate the superficial (triceps surae) and posterior compartment muscles of the leg along their length. Ruptures or strains of the gastrocnemius usually occur to the medial muscle belly where the Achilles tendon joins the belly. In addition to point tenderness, a gap can sometimes be felt in the muscle tissue.
