In Lesson 4 we learned that the biblical writers often quoted Scripture. This
is especially true of New Testament writers who quoted verses or referred to
events in the Old Testament. In such cases the use of this quote (or allusion)*
cannot be completely understood apart from an understanding of the original
quote or event referred to. Stated in rule form, when a biblical author quotes
another passage of the Bible, the use of the quote in a new context will be
consistent with its meaning in its original context. Similarly, when the Bible
quotes itself, the passage where the quote appears cannot be fully understood
without an understanding of the quote in its original context.
