The large toe has two phalanges: proximal and distal. The proximal base of the proximal phalanx bears an oval, concave articular surface with the glenoid cavity smaller than the corresponding articular surface of the metatarsal head (Fig. 16-11).183 The articular surface of the head is trochlear and strongly convex in the dorsoplantar direction. The distal phalanx has an articular surface corresponding to thetrochlear surface of the proximal phalangeal head. This surface is convex centrally and concave laterally.
