5. Individualism. The church, by its very nature, is communal—the opposite of individualistic. The very name “body of Christ” given to the church in the New Testament indicates the interdependent character of the church. It’s a place where people care for each other, live for one another, and share a common life. God dispenses his grace, love, and mercy through gifted people in the church.
The New Testament church is most certainly sacramental. It is a vessel bearing the grace of God to people. And people in the church are likewise sacraments. They bear gifts of grace to each other.I am a recipient of gifts of grace borne by the people of the church. Most of what I know of the Christian faith has been mediated to me through humans who taught me, me, loved me, challenged me, encouraged me, and helped me grow.
Churches that know what time it is will determine to make the communal character of the church strong and vibrant. No Lone Ranger pastors need apply!
