The pioneers of social enterprises can be traced back to the 1840s when a worker's co-operative was set up in Rochdale, UK (known as the birthplace of the co-operative movement) to provide affordable food to factory workers. Since the 1990s, such businesses for social purposes have been categorized as "social enterprises“.
