Instead, Bohemia looked for another king: at first, the Elector of Saxony was preferred, but he declined the honor since it would certainly lead to war with the Habsburgs, who naturally were unwilling to abandon control of Bohemia. Eventually, in August 1619 the Estates of Bohemia selected Frederick Wittelsbach, the Elector Palatine, as their king. He was the leader of the Protestant Union of German states and was married to the King of England's daughter.
