he's been "preparing" his girl group since 2010 and majority of the original line up is gone meanwhile he debuted TWO separate boy groups and even gave them shows. Enough said.

Tbh the predebut video of new yg girl group were underwhelming. Mediocre talent and 0 presence. Im glad he did not debut them. They were not ready. I think at first he just wanted to debut a bunch of pretty girls. I hope he changed his mind bc its a stupid idea and he would alienate his existing fanbase that value song and presence over visuals thus killing their competitive advantage.

It's not totally arbitrary but it's heavily influenced. There's a lot of groupthink in terms of who gets really popular. That's clearly not unique to Korea but it's definitely true in Korea.

They're not going say someone ugly is pretty but you need that backing. For example, Clara was around for 6-7 years, looking exactly the same and she couldn't even get parts, let alone be notable for being pretty. Then suddenly one day she gets a new agency and producers start pushing her and she's all over the place.

Someone alluded to it in the comments but Tzuyu gives off a Miss Korea vibe, which is why everyone is on the bandwagon. She's very similar to Yoona in that way. She is dazzling for sure, but so many girls in Kpop are beautiful and never catch breaks. She has a sort of girl next door vibe, like Yoona or Suzy but looks very glamorous (in the English context of being fancy or prestige). The fact that she's from JYP adds to that pedestal for Koreans, as does being Chinese

true, but from what i've seen, most girl group members are very gorgeous in general. but you only get the image of being pretty if you have fans to push that idea, otherwise you fall to the side, and have antis or people who dont care for you, pick your looks apart.

true, partly i think it's the exposure tho. groups from smaller agencies tend to be looked over, but if you take the time to know each and one of the members, their beauty will stick out more.
plus twice members retained their individual charms and looks, thanks to the show. whereas groups promoted with uniform (same styling) concepts like lovelyz, omg and rv in the beginning, they kinda blend along the mass. take them apart one by one, they are all pretty girls.

I think it also helps because they had a survival show, so fans and potential fans were able to single out and favor specific members from the beginning. It helps to see them in a human light, rather than from an idol group factory who got ps to resemble each other (even if they didn't).

Me too, I will never understand. I have never seen a female idol really ugly and I've never seen a female idol really beautiful. Sincerely pretty much for me all of them are equivalent... Maybe that's because I'm not Asian, but I don't understand their aesthetic canons. Sometimes I see an interesting face and Koreans say that she is ugly, then I see an average face and they say that she is beautiful... SNSD, APink, Red Velvet, these girls... None is particularly beautiful and none is particularly ugly... I don't see differences... Mah!
