I talked to my local colleagues in ministry and found that they were as uncertain as I. Each seemed to have a distinct and different role, and each resisted the roles and expectations of his congregation and the town. One saw himself as an evangelist. Another thought he was a social reformer. Still another visited in homes and the hospital from morning to night. Their spouses’ self-understanding was just as diverse. Some were partners in ministry; others weren’t. Their participation in the life of the church varied widely.
