Industry Fellows is substantially different from other models that attempt to integrate industry practice into the classroom, including internships, advisory committees, guest speakers, and industry experts teaching as adjunct instructors. Student internships, for example, provide a crucially important opportunity for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom and to interact with industry professionals. However, the internship experience varies significantly among students, both in terms of the work they do and the mentoring they receive [2]. Many of my students build data-driven websites for small businesses as internships, and work largely independently, receiving no mentoring at all.
