I'm Don Varney of Varney Speaks and on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to talk
about the interview process. What you're going to find is salary negotiations will come at
the time they offer you the job. You've done your homework, you know the range that they're
willing to pay, you feel based on your qualifications that you're certainly worth X number of dollars.
You may be a little bit above what they're willing to pay based on your background, your
knowledge, and your experience. There might be some little tweak in there that would allow
you to maybe get an extra 1,500 or 2,000 dollars, but don't worry about the salary negotiations
until they're offering you the job. When you get the phone call that says we'd like to
offer you this position. We would like for you to come in and sit down and talk with
us. That's when you walk in and you sit down. You begin then the hiring process. As a part
of that hiring process, they may ask you what do you feel you're worth, how much are you
expecting to do this work. At that point, it's up to you to very confidently with hesitation
have your figure. I'm telling you from experience, if your figure is way outside what they're
expecting to pay, they're not going to pay it. They're just not going to pay it. You
have applied for the wrong position if you're expecting too much. Don't be fearful of asking
for a certain amount of money, but then have your rationalization why you're worth it in
the event they ask. Most of the time, if they're happy to have you, they like you, you meet
the criteria, you've got some few extra little things, most people will work off that high
end. I'll tell you from over 40 years of experience in the world of industry and working with
businesses, I'm here to tell you that most of the time, you're kind of in the middle.
If it says 22-27, most people would take it at 25, and they know that. You have to be
special if you're going to do that.
