The data revealed that in approximately 10% of the solutions, a correct drawing helped the child to find the answer. The results also indicated that a linear relationship between number of correct responses and number of drawings did not exist. Although many pupils tried to visualize the word problems, about one half of those attempts did not yield the correct answer. This result underscores the heuristic character of the strategy. Generating a drawing does not guarantee that one finds the correct solution, but merely increases the chance that a problem will be conceptualized correctly.
