the fragmentation of the earth that had led to wars between the nations, to bitter conflicts between different parties within the Jewish community, and to the unjust treatment of the weak and the poor could all be traced to a displacement of human devotion. as their hearts turned away from the one true God and became attached to false gods, the harmony of the covenant relationship was ruptured and replaced by chaos in all spheres of life. fragmentation-begetting chaos could be overcome only in the situation where "Yahweh will be one and his name one." this is perhaps the most fundamental of all religious truths, one grasped and reformulated again and again by the true messengers of God:" hear, o Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might" (Deut 6:4). asked to name the commandment that was most important, Jesus quoted this same verse. Saint Augustine added his unforgettable version:"you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you" (confessions 1.1). pointing in the same direction was Paul Tillich's definition of religious faith as "ultimate concern.
