A holistic design approach encourages surveyors to revisit each question, looking at all of its parts to make sure they are sending a clear and consistent message to respondents. Making sure all of the words in the question stem, instructions, and response options send a clear and consistent message is a necessary first step toward achieving holistic design. But it is not the only thing that needs to be done. In the next chapter, we discuss how people process aural and visual information and present guidelines for improving how people perceive information in surveys.
