Draw an umbrella:
Explaining what outdoor experiential education is …can be problematic, as a variety of terms are being used to identify a wide range of outdoor experiential learning methods. So in year one, it was the first time you have heard experiential learning, outdoor experiential learning, then there is experiential education, adventure games, outdoor education, outdoor adventure recreation and now we have outdoor adventure education.
In fact, Outdoor Education is a method to apply experiential education.
Outdoor Education: Includes all activities and processes which rely on the natural environment with educational objective.
Challenge Education: Therapeutic work with adventure – based activities. Example: A specialist in psychology bringing a group of participants with depression for a challenging hike.
Outdoor Adventure Pursuits Education: Similar with Outdoor Adventure Education, but its more focused on technical skills development. Example: A outdoor leader bringing a group of participants to climb a mountain, its challenging and dangerous. And at the end of the trip, the leader would hope the participants would be skilled at mountaineering like navigation, map reading or skilled in using the hiking rope.
Adventure Education is…concerned with two relationships: Interpersonal and intrapersonal. Interpersonal relationships refer to how people get along in a group and intrapersonal relationships refer to how an individual gets along with self.”
