The lesser toes have three phalanges: proximal, middle, and distal (Fig. 16-11). The proximal phalanx is the longest of the three, and the base has an oval (concave) articular surface for the metatarsal head. The head supports a trochlear type of articular surface. The base of the middle phalanx bears a transverse articular surface corresponding to the trochlear contour of the proximal phalangeal head.183 The distal articular head presents a strong convexity in the dorsoplantar direction. The base of the distal phalanx corresponds to the head of the middle phalanx.
