1. The Second Compostellan Holy Year of the
Third Millennium
Each year pilgrims in ever-greater
numbers are making their way to the tomb of the
Apostle St. James the Great. The pilgrimage is,
among other realities, an allegory of the Church as
people of God, travelling towards the “citizenship
of the saints”. In the Holy Year 1999 I sought to
accompany pilgrims in their spiritual reflections
with the pastoral letter Pilgrims in Spirit and in
Truth and in 2004 with another entitled Pilgrims
through Grace. In this second Compostellan Holy
Year of the Third Christian Millennium that we
will celebrate in 2010, I would like to call to mind
the story of the disciples of Emmaus that tells
us of their encounter with the risen Christ. From
his tomb the Apostle St. James, the “friend of
the Lord”, also transmits to us the message that
Christ lives, and that therefore the pilgrim should
bear witness to this, in the knowledge that the
