Let us see how these principles affect our interpretation of
Colossians 1:19–20:
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through
him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in
heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Some use this verse to support their claim that all the world will ultimately
be saved. Taken in isolation, this verse appears to support that claim. However,
this interpretation contradicts multiple and clear texts which teach that
some will not be saved. Even the immediate context speaks of being saved
(reconciled) only as one continues in faith (v. 23). Here are just a few Scripture
verses found throughout the Bible that deny universal salvation: Matthew 18:8;
Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43, 48; Revelation 14:11.
