Kahn’s 1992 study builds on his prior work and describes the elements and benefits of presence. He defines the four dimensions of presence as attentiveness, connection, integration, and focus. When combined, these dimensions contribute to one’s ability to (a) continue learning; (b) question assumptions, imagine solutions, and implement change; and (c) be productive. By understanding oneself, others, and the situation, the present worker can formute solutions without becoming tangled in emotions of panic. From an organization’s standpoint, the benefits of employing individuals who are present at work include increased job performance and job satisfaction.
