Intensified public spaces result in public spaces that become on display. The UFA Cinema has situated access points as well as circulation through the cinema to act as an unfolding movie reel in which the individual becomes an actor within the space, a series of stills projected throughout. This logic transfers to the unfolding of public access aggressively through private spaces. Opening up the public realm allows for a voyeuristic ideal to become dominant throughout the space. This is made possible by opening up private space using translucent skins on the buildings. Individuals in private spaces become actors, on display, constantly engaged with public space within their own realm of privacy. The act of forging public access that breaks down private spaces (both mental and physical) creates a smoothing of a formerly striated space. Deleuze and Guattari do warn that smooth spaces are not enough to save us (Deleuze, 1987, p. 500) however this technique has potential to undermine alienation within the context of community. Deleuze also recognizes that smooth and striated spaces are constantly interplaying, as there is a reliance on each other. Perhaps the smoothing becomes striated as intensely private individuals resign themselves to turning small singular activity spaces into multiple activity spaces to avoid intermingling with public as much as possible.
