A New Approach
A BIM approach for project design and delivery is
a fundamental change from traditional drawingbased
workflows and therefore the transition to
BIM can be challenging for some organizations.
“When implementing BIM, everyone involved
in the project has to embrace teamwork,” says
Gasteiger. “Everyone has to make their data
available to the other people involved in the
project. This is essential for project coordination,
visualization, and documentation.” ATP uses BIM
training programs to overcome this challenge.
Employees take part in a 3-4 day BIM class that
helps them prepare for using BIM software and
processes.
Another key aspect of ATP’s BIM implementation
is the reliance on a BIM site expert to manage and
provide guidance on the use of the Revit project
model and new BIM worfklows. “The Revit model
is like a large storage facility. Everyone adds their
own pieces to the design model and the rest of
the team uses the Revit software to retrieve the
information they need to get their job done. The
BIM site expert makes sure that users understand
how to get and share information, so that ATP can
develop superior projects for its clients,” explains
Gasteiger.
