In a career spanning 21 feature films in 11 years including three blockbusters that each grossed more than 100 crore ($15 million) worldwide, Vidya Balan has made a virtue of playing strong characters.
The 37-year-old Bollywood star is benefiting from the industry’s increasing momentum towards casting women in more diverse and assertive roles. “We have had some very powerful female roles in the past but invariably those roles eulogized the sacrificial woman, whether as a wife or mother,” she tells FORBES from Melbourne where she has served as the ambassador of the annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne for the past six years.
“Pain and suffering were the definitive characteristics of women, but that’s changing. Today if there is any eulogy being written it’s part of being a woman who lives life on her own terms . It’s a reflection of the changing times all around us as women lead the life they want to be leading.”Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, who is known for her commanding screen presence and her silk saris on the red carpet, will be in Dubai on September 17.
The Kahaani actress will model the festive creations of designer Gaurang Narang, who’s known for using traditional weaves such as Kalamkari and Benarasi.
The show, at Taj Dubai, is by invite only, but the designer will exhibit his work in DubaiActor Vidya Balan is currently involved in the post-production of filmmaker Srijit Mukherji’s next film, Begum Jaan. But in between her schedule, she has also promoted Marathi film Ekk Albela on the global platform at the Indian Film Festival in Australia.
