Ghent originates from the Celtic settlements where the River Rees and the River Schelde meet. In the Middle Ages, Ghent became one of the largest cities in Europe as the wool and linen industries flourished. At the time Ghent also had the right to stockpile food. In the late 16th and 18th centuries, Ghent faced economic setbacks. The cotton industry has turned Ghent into one of Europe's first industrial cities.
According to the statistics of April 2015, Ghent has a population of 250,000 and is the second largest municipality in Belgium. It is located in the hub of the traffic and has a long history. It is still a tourist attraction.
