The tree project began after several children noticed a documentation panel from the previous year hanging in the hallway outside their classroom. They were excited to discover several of their siblings or friends in the photographs on this panel. In the photo, the children were examining a tree with beautiful pink blossoms on the playground. Later, when the children went outside to play, the teacher directed them to the same tree and asked what they noticed. Olivia, Miriam, and Eli all replied, “It’s green.” Olivia then added confidently, “It will be pink again.” Taking her cue from the responses of the children, the teacher then asked, “What color do you think the tree will be tomorrow?” “Blue,” predicted Miriam. “Red,” said Jack. “Yellow,” thought Olivia. The teacher took a photograph of the children standing under the tree so that they could compare how the tree looked each day. By the following day, more children had become interested in the lone tree on the playground. Although the tree was still green, children made confident predictions about the color they thought the leaves would be on the following day. Three children predicted green, and others predicted black, pink, orange, red, blue, and light blue. In addition, during group time the children decided that they would like to make a tree for inside the classroom. It was clear that a project had begun.
