Prevention and Treatment of CAUTIUrinary catheters are the most commonly useddevices in hospitals; it is estimated that up to 25%of hospitalized patients undergo catheterization fordifferent reasons such as urinary retention, surgicalprocedures, and prolonged immobilization.9,107,108As our population ages, the use of urinarycatheters becomes more frequent due to increasedincidence of chronic and lifestyle-related diseases.Up to 13% of men and 12% of women have anindwelling urinary catheter on admission tonursing homes.109 Hospitalizations resulting fromcatheter-related complications are increasing.110In 2008, the Centers for Medicare and MedicaidServices ceased reimbursement for the increasedcosts of care resulting from hospital-acquiredCAUTI.111 In response, hospitals have developedstrategies to reduce costs incurred and improvepatient outcomes.112
