The belief in territorial spirits is based on the idea that “certain angels and/or demons are entrusted with the special oversight of particular kingdoms.” Some believers have held this belief throughout church history, and they have based this idea on Daniel Chapter 10, which we will examine later. While some Bible scholars have adopted this viewpoint, others have objected to it on various grounds. You may well ask, “If this assertion is as old as the church, why do we refer to it as a contemporary issue?” We do so because the current emphasis is on developing a doctrine and practice that have minimal scriptural support. In other words, while Daniel 10 primarily indicates the existence of territorial spirits, overall the biblical evidence is limited. As a result, the speculations and practices of today’s Bible teachers on the subject go far beyond what God has revealed in Scripture.
