Others claim that the difference lies not in the quality of the experience, but in the duration. Many understand the language came upon (such as with Saul or the prophets) as an indication of a temporary experience. However, too many examples in Scripture suggest otherwise. Joseph (Genesis 41:38), David (1 Samuel 16:13), Moses, Elijah, and Elisha (all referred to by the Hebrew phrase, Ish HaElohim, man of God or divine man—one in close and constant contact with the divinity; specifically on Elisha, cf. Ben Sira 48:12), Daniel (Daniel 4:8, 9, 18; 5:11, 14), John the Baptist (Luke 1:15), Simeon (Luke 2:25), and even Jesus (John 1:33) suggest that a consistent life in the Spirit prior to Pentecost was possible.
