Even in early childhood, brightly colored earmolds and hearing aids are more likely to invite regular and unsolicited attention from others, which may initiate the social and emotional responses that contribute to later hearing aid rejection. Thus, the choice of earmold style, color, and features for older children can, in many cases, be the first step in the transition to adult features. It is recommended that audiologists resist the urge to please the child and parent with brightly colored earmolds and select a clear- or flesh-colored material (acrylic, vinyl, silicone) that is less likely to draw attention and more likely to remain in the ears.
