This textbook is designed to help current and future managers of hospitality and tourism organizations to develop the tools needed to successfully manage their human resources. It focuses on providing an understanding both of the basic concepts underlying human resource management and of the strategies needed. Chapter 1 discusses generally the role of human resources on today's hospitality industry and provides a brief overview of the remaining chapters. Each of the next eight chapters deals with the development of a particular skill area that is critical to successfully managing and leading human resources. Skill areas covered are: communication, leadership, motivation, conflict resolution, stress management, decision making, training, and organization development. General learning about the given skill is followed by learning about how the skill can be applied at the individual, group and organizational levels. Chapter 10 provides guidelines for developing a comprehensive human resource strategy based on what has been learnt throughout the book. The chapters contain a list of key learning objectives, self-assessments, a summary of key ideas, review questions, practical skill-building exercises, relevant case studies drawn primarily from the USA, and a list of key terms. A glossary and index are also included.
