Also one should palpate the peroneal retinaculum, which holds the peroneal tendons in place, for tenderness. The lateral ligaments (anterior tibiofibular, anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular, posterior talofibular, and posterior tibiofibular) are palpated for tenderness and swelling (Fig. 16-14). Theseligaments will be point tender if they are sprained or partially torn. The most common sprain is of the anterior talofibular ligament. This injury occurs during plantar flexion and inversion. The bifurcate ligament (calcaneocuboid or calcaneonavicular portion) will be tender if sprained or partially torn from a plantar flexion injury (Fig. 16-14)
