The articulations of the phalanges of the toes are essentially similar to those of the fingers (Fig. 16-11). On the plantar surface the capsule of each interphalangeal joint is thickened by a shallow concave plate, the plantar ligament; attached to its edges are the digital tendon sheaths as well as the lateral part of the fibrous capsule (Fig. 16-21).83 The collateral ligaments of the interphalangeal joints extend from the lateral aspect of the head of the corresponding phalanx to the base of the distally located phalanx (Fig. 16-21). When sesamoid bones are present, they are an integral part of the plantar plate.
