Materialism/consumerism. The Bible declares that ultimate reality is spiritual not material, that real significance is found in matters of the heart, and that we are whole when we love God and each other. Whole people are driven by a passion for God and a love of neighbor — not by acquisition of things.
The church needs to learn that lesson fast. Christians know better, but we often act as though we believe that those who have accumulated the most material things have the greatest significance. We even talk as if they have special favor with God. The twenty-first-century church must demonstrate otherwise. We must develop a spirituality that is in touch with this world but is driven by the values of gospel and eternity.
