Just lateral to the tibialis anterior tendon, the extensor hallucis longus tendon can easily be seen and palpated as the subject extends the big toe. Running laterally to the extensor hallucis longus tendon, passing distally from where it emerges at the ankle, is the dorsalis pedis artery. Its pulse can best be palpated over the dorsum of the foot, at about the level of the navicular and first cuneiform bones.
