The main landed species are the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi), the whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), the Patagonian grenadier (Macruronus magellanicus) and the Brazilian sardinella (Sardinella brasiliensis). Argentina accounted for 58 percent of the total catches, Brazil for more than 35 percent, and Uruguay represented less than 6 percent. Shrimps, shellfish and other fish also play an important socio-economic role. Most SSF are diverse and multigear. They target a variety of species, and play important social, cultural and economic roles, but face weak and unstable governance regimes.
