In this paper an innovative electromagnetic drive solution which improve both performance and efficiency for a ship steering gear has been shown. The sizing of the EMD was the objective of [8]. In order to validate this improvement a complete and accurate model has been built in Simulink environment. Different physic domains (electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical) were connected. Simulations have been performed varying the servo-assistance factor, with two working electro-pumps, from 0% to 90%. The result show that the HSD efficiency is 46%. A comparisons between EMD, HSD, and overall efficiencies show that the overall efficiency of the ship steering-gear is always increased for both small and high level of servo-assistance factor. VIII
