This standard is used for the design, workmanship, and quality assurance of arc-welded studs and
steel sheet parts welded onto surface-coated and uncoated sheet steels (thickness = 0,7 mm to
5,0 mm) using a drawn arc process. For deviating – mainly thinner – wall thicknesses, an agreement
between Design Engineering, Planning, and Quality Assurance is required for each individual case.
Drawing notes take precedence. The joint is subject primarily to static loads.
All arc-welded joints falling beyond the scope of this standard require the clarification of the responsible
engineering departments. Special measures made necessary because of the component, e.g.
change to the quality level for specific imperfections, are permissible and must be entered in the
drawing.
The criteria given in Test Specification PV 1604 are the decisive criteria when auditing the quality of
arc-welded sheet metal joints.
The criteria given in PV 1606 "Stud Welding with Drawn Arc; Evaluation of Welded Joint; currently in
draft form" are the decisive criteria when auditing the quality of arc-welded studs.
The strength testing of weld screws and nuts is conducted according to VW 60560.
