A chromosomal translocation disrupting the gene DISC1 (disrupted in schizophrenia 1) found in a large Scottish family is the most established mutation linked with mental disorders (Ishizuka et al., 2006; O’Tuathaigh et al., 2007). Although most of affected members of this family had depression or schizophrenia, one of them had bipolar disorder, suggesting that mutant mice of DISC1 might be able to model bipolar disorder. Several groups have generated transgenic mice with wild type or mutant DISC1, and they found several behavioral abnormalities, such as hyperactivity, deficits in sensorimotor gating, and impaired sociality, although these findings have not yet published (Ishizuka et al., 2006; O’Tuathaigh et al., 2007).
