The first TMT joint (the articulations between the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform) has its own articular capsule (Fig. 16-18). The articular surface of the base of the first metatarsal presents a slight concavity transversely, the base of the second is concave with its articulation with the second cuneiform, the base of the third is flat, and the articular surface of the fourth is slightly convex with its articulation with the cuboid (Fig. 16-3).183 The base of the fifth metatarsal is flat in a dorsoplantar direction and is projected laterally as the styloid apophysis or tubercle, which gives insertion to the peroneus brevis tendon.
