When talking about my peculiarity that sets me apart fromthe large poolof applicants of theUniversity of California, the first thing that comes to my mind is my special spatial imagination ability.
I can form 3D models of complex buildingsin my mind when I walk on the street. After looking around the building, I can rotate a3D modelwith my imagination. If I go inside the building, I amable to figure out the details of each area and put them together as a whole. What’s more, I can remember the layout of one floor clearlyto find the place I am interested in accurately. For some parts in the building I am not familiar with, including elevators, I canuse my knowledge of architecture to attempta suitable design of their shapes and locations.
I benefit a lot from this talent in my daily life. One example is that I have an excellent sense of direction. I never get lost if I have a simple map at hand or if I go to any places that I have been to. Surprisingly, I can image the whole 3D models of several big cities I am familiar with, including Guangzhou, Shantou, and Shenzhen. One day, my friend and I took a taxi to a shopping mall, and we were dropped at an unfamiliar place. I “opened” my 3D model of the city in my mindand figured out the correct building by looking at its back side, which I have never seen before. But Imanaged to see the whole picture of this architecture and speculated the look of its back side as I had seen what its front side looked like.
Another advantage I get from thistalent is that I can learn the courses related tospatial imagination ability quite easily, including “solid geometry” and physics. When other students werestruggling with complex geometry and structure motion, I could figure them out in a short time. I believe this quality of mine will help me adapt to college life easily
