The five metatarsals articulate with the three cuneiforms and the cuboid and form the tarsometatarsal (TMT) or Lisfranc’s joint (Fig. 16-10). They are plane synovial joints. Proximally, the bases of the metatarsals are disposed in an arcuate fashion forming a transverse arch that is high medially and low laterally. The apex of this arch corresponds to the base of the second metatarsal. The metatarsals are also flexed, thus contributing to the formation of the longitudinal arch.
