The National Center for Education Statistics (Miller 2003) surveyed 2,270 regular public K-12 schools regarding school crime and safety. The report found that 71% of the schools experienced at least one incident of violent crime in 1999-2000. This report also revealed that one or more serious violent incidents occurred in 20% of the schools surveyed. Campuses that were most likely to report violent incidents included secondary institutions, inner-city schools, schools with the lowest achievement, and schools that incorporated a large number of classroom changes during the school day.
